Electrical basics for campervans and overlanders

  • If you plan to run a fridge, lights or charge devices off-grid, plan a dual-battery system or dedicated leisure battery with a proper isolator/ADVC.
  • Estimate daily energy use (fridge, lights, phone, comms) then size battery + charging (alternator and solar) accordingly. A small fridge typically needs 30–60Ah/day; plan with a safety margin.
  • Use correct fuse sizes, high-quality wiring and proper crimped/heat-shrunk connections. Label circuits. If in doubt, get an experienced installer to review your system.

Driving techniques (basic)

  • Reduce tyre pressures on soft sand/mud to increase footprint — but know your vehicle’s limits and how to re-inflate. Reinflate before long highway drives.
  • Use low-range 4WD for steep, slow, technical sections. Keep revs steady and avoid aggressive inputs that spin tyres.
  • Understand momentum: sometimes a bit of steady momentum helps; other times momentum causes a loss of traction. When in doubt, walk the route first.
  • Descend hills using engine braking; avoid constant heavy braking which can overheat brakes.

Recovery basics (safety-first)

  • Before attempting a recovery, assess the situation and consider the safest option (wedging underbody may be safer than a risky snatch recovery).
  • Use rated recovery gear and use a dampening blanket (or purpose recovery dampener) on straps and winch lines to reduce snap-back risk.
