Daffy

The Project

Daffy lived her former life working for the Environment Agency - a government organisation in the UK.

She is a 2012 Land Rover Defender Heavy Duty 2.2l (Puma) Hard Top that has about 135k miles on the clock, and was purchased through a dealer in Sussex (whom I won't mention because I wouldn't recommend them!)

Equipped with a Warn winch, secondary battery system, AC, electric windows, an Eberspaecher Diesel heater and auxiliary lighting, she has lots of extras (to go wrong) and is in need of some TLC before we can start making her into the vehicle we need for our ambition of going on adventures around the UK and Europe.

This is a work in progress and we'll update as and when we do stuff, but it's a long term project that is poorly financed TBH. so we are doing as much as we can ourselves.

What's good!

• The Engine was refurbished before we got her so she is now just getting run-in again and runs really well.
• Mostly the body is sound
• DPF is fine
• Mechanicals are all fine (but leak oil)

What NEEDS attention

• Air Conditioning - the condenser was like Swiss cheese and so the system is empty and not working.
• Diesel heater - the fan catches and doesn't run
• Cabin heat - on long runs the exhaust makes the floor of the cabin, especially on the drivers side, roasting hot.
• Auxiliary electrics - bit of a mess, need to re-do
• Winch - Untested - it was disconnected when we got the vehicle and there were no keys for the isolators
• Internal Lighting - Fluorescent tubes smashed
• External Lighting - we don't need a fuz light or rear high level flashers, however we do need aux driving lights and work lights
• Locks
• Door cards
• Rear View
• Headlight levelling Servos (click, click, click)
• Water ingress - Drivers side and passengers side footwells
• ....

What we have done so far

• Replaced the Work Light at the rear of the vehicle which was rusted through
• Replaced the steering cluster including ignition switch, Light Switch, Indicator Switch and Wiper Switch
• Repaired Steering column plastics
• Removed broken PA system and speaker
• Repaired the Radio
• Replaced bonnet release cable
• Removed woodwork in loadspace
• .....

What we would like to do

• Remove the roller Shutters and replace them with doors or windows that would be watertight, quieter and thermally better
• Remove storage system
• Remove secondary bulkhead (cargo bulkhead)
• Install Storage systems
• Improve power systems
• Install water storage, pumping and treatment
• Shore power
• Install day bed
• ....
